Buying Local

Many families who want to live a more earth friendly lifestyle are often given the advice of buying local.  Buying local is about eating real food grown by real people in your neighborhood or town. Buy local is eating fresh in season food.

Buying local is good for the environment because it reduces the distance food has to travel to get to you.  This reduces cost and its carbon footprint.

It is also a great way to interact with your community.  It builds strong bonds and a strong local economy. Imagine being able to look at the person grew or made the item that you are purchasing.  Everyone benefits.

Sounds great but don’t know where to start?  One of our favorite resources is LocalHarvest. LocalHarvest not only lets you search your local area you can search for your specific needs.  On localharvest.org, you can search for local farms, farmers markets, restaurants, food co-ops/groceries, pick your own or farm stands.
